About the Founder: Brain Research Africa Initiative (BRAIN)
Professor Alfred K. NJAMNSHI
Alfred Kongnyu NJAMNSHI, MD, MA, DMS, FMH, FCAS, FAAS, FRCP (UK), is a professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of The University of Yaoundé I (Cameroon), where he founded and heads the Neuroscience Laboratory, chairs the neurology and neuroscience residency programs and coordinates the school’s 31 residency programs. He is also Chief of Neurology at the Yaoundé Central Hospital, the base of his clinical practice and training of students/residents. He obtained his MD from the University of Yaoundé,
Cameroon, and is Swiss-Board Certified (FMH) in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology; holder of an MA Education (medical education) from the UK, where he is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP). Prof Njamnshi is a fellow of the Cameroon Academy of Sciences and also a fellow of the African Academy of Sciences. He has published over 180 peer-reviewed scientific articles in high-impact journals. His current research focus is brain health as well as basic, clinical, translational, and environmental neuroscience, targeting dementia, sleep medicine, epilepsy and stroke.
Prof. Njamnshi is the Founder and Executive Director of Brain Research Africa Initiative (BRAIN) (www.brainafrica.org) with the vision, mission, and passion of promoting neuroscience research, brain health, and development (R&D) in Africa. BRAIN's global office is in Geneva-Switzerland, where she has obtained the status of a public utility organization, and the continental office is in Yaoundé, Cameroon. BRAIN (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laneur/article/PIIS1474-4422(23)00164-3/fulltext) has a network of partner institutions that help her accomplish her mission, including university/research institutions in the USA, Europe and Africa, for example, the African Union Commission and 24 Faculties of Medicine from 15 African countries. BRAIN has recently become part of the International Brain Initiative (IBI) as the 3rd Affiliate in the World, after Finland and New Zealand, allowing her to sit on the IBI Executive Committee.
Prof. Njamnshi is President of the Society of Cameroonian Neurologists (SCAN), Delegate for Cameroon to the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) Council of Delegates, WFN emeritus Director for Africa, Life Past President of the Pan African Association of Neurological Sciences (PAANS) and Founding Member-Past-Vice President of the African Academy of Neurology (AFAN).
Alfred, through his organization BRAIN and with partners including the Government of Cameroon, the African Union, and other international brain health organizations, led the organization of the first African High-level Science Summit on the Brain Economy, Brain Health, and Brain Capital (https://brainafrica.org/the-yaounde-declaration-report-of-the-first-african-high-level-science-summit-on-brain-economy-brain-health-and-brain-capital/), that took place in Yaoundé Cameroon under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cameroon as a prelude to the 79th United Nations General Assembly Brain Days (September 18-21, 2024) in New York, where he is co-organizer and Keynote Speaker. The African science summit produced the Yaoundé Declaration on Brain Economy, Brain Health, and Brain Capital (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laneur/article/PIIS1474-4422(24)00364-8/fulltext).
Prof. Njamnshi is a neurodiplomacy scholar dedicated to promoting neuroscience research, training, and capacity building both in Africa and globally.
